Mortal Magazine was designed to give readers a break from the constant barrage of screens we see in our everyday lives.

I was inspired by Swiss grids for my layouts, to give a sense of order, while allowing for experimentation and complex layouts.

I decided to illustrate by hand with pen and paper to enhance the tactile feel of the magazine and get readers thinking about working with their hands instead of digital technology.

The colors of Mortal

For headlines, I chose Alte Haas Grotesk for its subtle softness and clean geometric letterforms. For all other typography, I chose the Ten Oldtsyle as a sophisticated and calm serif that offered great versatility.

Although I did as much as I could with my bare hands, eventually, I needed to use a computer. Using Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign I translated illustrations, photos, and articles into a print ready magazine.
